Very Disturbing.

I ran across this very disturbing story today.

All I can do is echo this guys statement.

“It is disturbing enough that the general public failed ISI’s civic literacy test, but when you consider the even more dismal scores of elected officials, you have to be concerned,” said Josiah Bunting, chairman of the National Civic Literacy Board at ISI.

“How can political leaders make informed decisions if they don’t understand the American experience?” he added.

Now American History and Civics were not two of my strongest subjects in school… so before I got too uppity, I wanted to see how well I would fair on the test.

Now to be fair I had to take the test again at home so I could get this picture. The first time I got an 81.82%.

As I was explaining this to Mrs. York she said, “I wonder how I would do?”

What’s the point? Two people who know next to nothing about all this jazz did WAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY better than people who do this for a living. That… is scary.

What have you complained about today?

How not to raise a Pagan.

Dr. Mohler explains the importance of how we raise our kids. I used to, a few years ago, think that as long as my kids didn’t end up on drugs or in jail… that I had done a pretty good job. My vision then was incredibly short sighted and woefully lacking of ANY biblical understanding of my responsibilities as a parent. My dilemma now is not what or how I should be teaching my kids… but fighting against my natural tendencies to slip back into apathy, and for the sake of quiet abdicate my role to the TV.

For many generations now our “baby sitter” has been, what the old timers rightly called, “The Idiot Box”. We (as a nation, myself included) allow our children to be entertained by the mind numbing drivel that fills up cable television programing, and then are shocked by the behavior of kids. Don’t they know better? Why would they do something like that? What’s the matter with these kids today? US! No they don’t know better because we haven’t told them, not only what not to do and why not to do it, but we haven’t even bothered to tell the what they should be doing. And WHY haven’t we told them… because we do the very same thing. We say things like, “Sorry honey you can’t watch Sponge Bob right now… BECAUSE DADDY WANTS TO WATCH GOOD EATS” and we sit, minds turned off, watching TV until it’s time to go to bed, and we call this RELAXATION! How pathetic. How utterly and completely pathetic.

Even if all I let my kids watch is “educational” programing, I am still doing a great disservice to them. They don’t ultimately need to know their ABC’s by the time they are two, or how to count 15 apples, or even 37 different things you can do to make broccoli taste good. They need to know what God has said… and if I fail to do that, everything else is pointless.

Wisdom shouts in the street,
She lifts her voice in the square;
At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
“How long, O naive ones, will you love being simple-minded?
And scoffers delight themselves in scoffing
And fools hate knowledge?
“Turn to my reproof,
Behold, I will pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
“Because I called and you refused,
I stretched out my hand and no one paid attention;
And you neglected all my counsel
And did not want my reproof;
I will also laugh at your calamity;
I will mock when your dread comes,
When your dread comes like a storm
And your calamity comes like a whirlwind,
when distress and anguish come upon you.
“Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;
They will seek me diligently but they will not find me,
Because they hated knowledge
And did not choose the fear of the LORD.
“They would not accept my counsel,
They spurned all my reproof.
“So they shall eat of the fruit of their own way
And be satiated with their own devices.
“For the waywardness of the naive will kill them,
And the complacency of fools will destroy them.
“But he who listens to me shall live securely
And will be at ease from the dread of evil.”
