…because it seems like this describes the majority of the customers I deal with on a daily basis.
John MacArthur has a way with cutting through the nonsense of what passes for “the church” these days.
Whole churches have thus deliberately immersed themselves in “the culture”–by which they actually mean “whatever the world loves at the moment.” We now have a new breed of trendy churches whose preachers can rattle off references to every popular icon, every trifling meme, every tasteless fashion, and every vapid trend that captures the fickle fancy of the postmodern secular mind.
There are multitudes who wish to escape the Lake of fire!
(Arthur Pink, “Present Day Evangelism”)
The nature of Christ’s salvation, is woefully misrepresented by the present-day “evangelist.” He announces a Savior from hell–rather than a Savior from sin! And that is why so many are fatally deceived, for there are multitudes who wish to escape the Lake of fire–who have no desire to be delivered from their carnality and worldliness! If “modern evangelism” is weighed in the balances of Holy Writ, it will be found lacking; lacking that which is vital to genuine conversion, lacking what is essential if sinners are to be shown their need of a Savior, lacking that which will produce the transformed lives of new creatures in Christ Jesus.
The “evangelism” of the day is not only superficial to the last degree–but it is radically defective. It is utterly lacking a foundation on which to base an appeal for sinners to come to Christ. There is not only a lamentable lack of proportion (the mercy of God being made far more prominent than His holiness, His love than His wrath)–but there is a fatal omission of that which God has given for the purpose of imparting a knowledge of sin. There is not only a reprehensible introducing of humorous witticisms and entertaining anecdotes–but there is a studied omission of dark background upon which alone the Gospel can effectively shine forth. Christians who believe many religions can lead to eternal life, 80% name at least one non-Christian faith that can do so. These are among the key findings of a national survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life from July 31-Aug. 10, 2008, among 2,905 adults.
Quite frankly, I’m tired of being associated with people like this. Since the odds of getting them to call themselves Universalists, which they are, is very slim, the 20% of us who actually believe what Scripture CLEARLY teaches should just choose a new name. Something with the word Fundamental in it… that word tends to drive the other 80% nuts.
As Mr. Mohler says…
Those who believe that the gospel of Christ is just a variant of “the American way” will find that the Bible presents a very different Gospel. Those who reject biblical authority will feel free to replace biblical Christianity with a new religion, but they should demonstrate enough honesty to admit that this is indeed what they are doing. Those who are convinced that social respectability determines doctrine will soon find themselves to be socially respectable pagans.
Of course, the great question missing from Charles Blow’s column is this: What if Jesus really is the only way of salvation? If so, and Jesus clearly said that it is so, then public relations and etiquette are quickly revealed to be rather frivolous concerns — indeed, these concerns are revealed to be both deadly and delusional.
To sum it all up I’d like to say, if you believe all (or many) religions lead to the same place you are a UNIVERSALIST… stop identifying yourself as a christian… it’s ok… you can say it… the other 20% of us already know… really… just go ahead and admit it.
